25th October 2019 - 26th October 2019
9:00pm - 2:00am
Greg Wilson is a DJ name normally preceded by the word ‘legendary’ when you see it in the music press. With a career that spans nearly four decades taking in some of the most iconic venues from Wigan Pier to the Hacienda, Legends to We Love Space, it’s certainly deserved. As a veteran DJ Greg is possibly more in-demand than he has ever been, lighting up dance floors in every corner of the world from Brazil to Australia. Career firsts are peppered throughout his CV: One of the first UK DJs to embrace the art of mixing and the pioneering sound of Electrofunk. The first DJ to mix live on British TV (The Tube in 1983). One of the first UK DJs to edit tunes creatively for the dance floor. This was back when to ‘edit’ a track meant to literally cut and splice tape loops with a razor blade (his Revox Reel-to-Reel is still a signature part of his DJ sets). The range of artists whose music he has enhanced is too long to list here, but a snapshot would include Grace Jones, The XX, Talking heads, Brian Ferry, Steve Mason etc. Away from the dance floor Greg is a prolific writer, archivist and a founder of multimedia label Super Weird Substance that puts out its own signature psychedelicdubdisco sound as well as organising 60’s style happenings which incorporate talks, music, art and DJs. This is Greg’s first time in Leytonstone and promises to be a little bit special.
Support for Greg will be in the form of local DJs Dom Mandrell and Pete Fowler who also happen to part of Greg’s Super Weird extended family. Both are visual artists as well as DJs and have worked creatively with him in the past producing illustrations, album covers and merchandise. Both also Djed as part of Greg’s marathon Super Weird Happening event in 2017 in Liverpool. Dom is probably best known locally for his work with Soul Picnic and for being the founder of the dance tent at the Walthamstow Garden Party. Pete is one half of the band Seahawks, has toured regularly with Hot Chip and is a regular at all the big festivals. Joining them will be sultry disco botherer Citizen Helene. Both a DJ singer/songwriter and musician in her own right Helene has played opening sets for the High Llamas, Ed Harcourt, Chris T-T and Liam Bailey. She will be joining Dom and Pete to drop some disco gems and balearic nuggets of her own.
