Upcoming Art Exhibition Showcases A Love Letter To Our Local Greengrocers & High Street Shops
100 Days of Groceries is a love-letter to our local greengrocers, fruit & veg stands, butchers, deli’s, corner shops and bakeries along the high streets of Walthamstow & Chingford Mount.
For the weekend of the 4th – 6th November, Winn’s Gallery will be exhibiting a preview show of photographic screenprints showcasing the images and stories of five high street shops local to Chingford Mount and Walthamstow, made by artist Neeli Malik (b.1998, London) in conjunction with Waltham Forest Arts & Culture.
100 Days of Groceries is a project that captures not only the history of where a shop may stand, but the voices and stories of the people running them. It explores the culture of the ‘food shop’ in a given community and repositions the importance of the high street through a collection of thirteen colourful photographic silkscreen prints that capture the simple, yet vibrant beauty of high street storefronts. These artworks have been produced following conversations and collaborations with local stores and will be exhibited alongside their corresponding transcribed interviews.
“The artworks and accompanying interviews in this project all tell a variety of stories: of community strength; of business entrepreneurship, of multicultural diversity, of struggles and hardships, of anxieties in uncertain times. Stories of where they started, where they’re going, and of hopes for the future. It paints a picture through the lens of the food shop.”
– Neeli Malik, artist
The preview show offers a sneak peek at the artworks and a chance to visit the show before the exhibition is moved to Chingford Mount. Winns Gallery is located within Lloyd Park and is a stone’s throw from William Morris Gallery and coincides with Lloyd Park Market on Saturday.
If you miss the November preview exhibition, don’t worry! The exhibition will be returning in from Thursday 12th January to Sunday 3rd February at 228 Chingford Mount Road, a high-street shop turned gallery, in the heart of the Chingford Mount community.
During the January show, 100 Days of Groceries will be releasing a programme of activities and events to the local community, including printmaking and photography workshops for kids and adults alike.
