Sweet Harmony: Radio, Rave & Waltham Forest, 1989-1994 is an exhibition and music event at Patchworks, Leyton – the borough’s most exciting new cultural venue.

Taking place 15-17 October, the event will bring together some of the pioneers from the era, celebrating the important heritage of pirate radio and rave and its impact on UK dance music culture. It’s the culmination of a two-year research project, undertaken by CIC Rendezvous Projects and is in partnership with Patchworks.

Why rave, why now? 1989 – 1994 was a distinct period in music history; at the end of the acid house music scene, garage, hardcore, jungle and drum and bass all emerged in quick succession. Waltham Forest played an important role in the development and dissemination of these musical genres, influencing a generation of musicians and young people. The borough’s role in this scene was previously undocumented and happened because of the diverse cultural mix of the area, its location and architecture.

Music event

The music event on Saturday 16 October (4-11pm) will include DJs who helped develop the local scene, including: Linden C (Mi House Radio, Strictly Rhythm, Hypnosis, Dungeons), Rob Acteson (Strictly Rhythm, Hypnosis, Dungeons), Dlux (Déjà Vu FM, Brain Records, Dungeons), Adrian H (Pulse FM, Dungeons, Labrynth), DJ Connie (Runtings, Centreforce, Dungeons), Mad B (Friends FM, Dungeons) and Original ID (Friends FM, Kool FM, Déjà Vu FM). They will be playing a mixture of classic deep house, underground house, hardcore, jungle, and drum and bass.

Exhibition

The exhibition will include rare hand-painted 90s rave banners and artwork by Walthamstow-based company Bannerama, and include photographs, flyers and projections from the era and area. This will be free to the public 9am-11pm on Friday 15 and Sunday 17 October, and will be accessible with a ticket from 4pm as part of the music event on Saturday 16 October.
