Noisy World is a solo exhibition of recent works on paper by Steve Perfect. With simple line drawings of ordinary objects and mundane moments, Perfect outlines an alternative vision to the competitive pursuit of perfectionism in modern society.
Delicate line drawings depict scenes from Perfect’s daily life – still lives and portraits – interspersed with dreamier subjects. As writes Emily Watkins in her essay: “Perfect’s poetry practice reverberates throughout the exhibition, sometimes approaching whimsy but always pulling up short. Each tableau operates on multiple planes at once – cursory readings might seem trivial, but there’s a tugging profundity beneath even the simplest surface. In the artist’s words, ‘It can seem quite light, like little snapshots of everyday life – but actually, there’s something more thoughtful going on underneath’.”
Introduced by the show’s curator Nadine Lockyer, Steve Perfect will discuss personal and art historical references and where to find inspiration in a noisy world with art critic Tabish Khan on Monday 19 May.
